The Coronation of the Herring Queen (Single)

by Meadowsilver

/

about

A psych folk tribute to the Herring Queen ceremony.
“Once a year (and for the last hundred years) the Scottish coastal town of Eyemouth chooses a local to be that year's Herring Queen. Arriving by ship into the harbour, she is met by her maids in waiting and reigns until the next again summer. A festival to bind the town's inhabitants together, this ritual also inhabits similar folkloric territory with harvest fortune and fertility rites such as South Queensferry's 'The Burryman' and the May Queen tradition found throughout the UK.” - Grey Malkin.

lyrics

Come sing
Come sow
Come and be
Come with masks
Come and dance
Offer unto the sea

Come kneel
The coronation of the herring queen

Come praise
Come raise
The sails again
Come by chance
But by night
Be gone my friend

Come kneel
At the crowning of the herring queen

Come run
Come the moon
Come the hare
Once were queen
Now a maid
At the harbour fair

Come kneel
At the crowning of the herring queen
